DOT (@dotfashions), a line of handmade bags, purses and briefcases founded in 2010 by Dorothy Ughenu is proving to be much more than just a dot. Their latest collection called Summer Candies is fueled by geometric design and some purses are octagon or box-shaped mostly inspired by straight surfaces, 2D and 3D shapes held at the sides with leather straps or chain slings. Made to change even the simplest outfit from drab to fab, they come with an attitude of their own that spells edgy, quirky and fun but also very practical.
Where briefcases are mostly seen as a male-owned, their feminine adaptation of the accessory brings a fresh and unique perspective to design with a firm belief that fashion is fun, fearless, individualistic, and should be expressed both as an art form and a way of life. Their designs are conversation starters and get you noticed for the right reasons.
Geometry first appeared in fashion as fabric and has made its way into the actual structure of clothes and accessories giving most apparel a retro yet futuristic appeal. The beauty of DOT’s new releases shows odd shapes can and do look stylish. Since the label’s debut at the MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week in October 2011 (Nigeria), DOT has since become a regular favourite amongst many fashionistas.
